Not everything that gets called an emergency really is one — but when it is, the difference between a courier that runs at 11pm and one that doesn’t is the difference between a problem solved and a problem that costs you the next day too.

What “after hours” actually means at Drop-X

Drop-X runs a genuine after-hours courier service across Melbourne from 6pm to 6am, including weekends and public holidays. “Genuine” means a real Melbourne dispatcher answers 1300 973 038 at 11pm, not an answering machine. It means a driver is dispatched, not promised for the morning. It means photo proof of delivery comes back to you before you go to sleep.

The most common after-hours jobs we run

Manufacturing and production breakdowns. A plant that runs a night shift cannot wait until 7am for a bearing or a drive belt. The line-down cost per hour vastly exceeds the after-hours surcharge on a courier run. This is the most common emergency freight call we get.

Medical and pharmaceutical. Hospital wards, on-call pathology services, and after-hours pharmacies all need freight that can’t wait. Blood samples with degradation windows, urgent medication, medical device kits for a procedure first thing in the morning.

Legal documents. Injunctions, urgent affidavits, settlement documents with overnight deadlines. Solicitors and barristers’ clerks making evening runs across Melbourne to meet filing windows are among our most regular after-hours clients.

Events and hospitality. A venue that is missing equipment for a function tomorrow morning, a catering company that has a delivery fail and needs a same-night re-supply, a trade show with a bump-in starting at 6am.

IT and telecommunications. Network outages that need hardware on site overnight so systems are restored before business opens. The cost of a two-hour outage is almost always higher than an after-hours courier run.

What it costs

After-hours jobs carry a flat overnight surcharge on top of the standard job rate, quoted in full before dispatch. There is no “emergency premium” applied after the fact. Metro Melbourne sedans and vans are available from the standard per-job rate plus the after-hours loading — call dispatch for a fast verbal quote on your specific run.

When it isn’t an emergency

If the freight can wait until 8am without real consequence, book a standard same-day morning run and save the after-hours rate. After-hours is priced to cover the real cost of running drivers overnight — it is not appropriate for freight that can move tomorrow without any material impact. The dispatch team will tell you honestly if the job can wait.

For after-hours bookings, call 1300 973 038 — answered every day of the year. See the after-hours service page for full details, or the legal document courier page for overnight legal runs.
