Every courier in Melbourne sells "same day". The honest version is a lot more interesting — and a lot more useful when you have a real deadline.
Here is how we actually price and book same day jobs at Drop-X, and what each service level really gets you on a Tuesday afternoon in Melbourne traffic.
Direct (1–2 hours, point-to-point)
One driver, your job only, no other stops. We dispatch the closest available vehicle the moment you book. Pickup is usually within 30–60 minutes inside the metro ring; drop-off depends purely on the distance and the M1. A direct CBD-to-Footscray run is typically delivered inside 90 minutes door-to-door.
Use this when something has to be there before a meeting, a court filing, a closing flight, or a manufacturing line that stops without the part.
Priority (3–4 hours)
Still a single driver, still your job, but routed alongside one or two compatible same-direction pickups. About 30% cheaper than direct and almost always there inside the half-day. Most "we need it this afternoon" business jobs fit here.
Standard same day (booked AM, delivered PM)
If you book before 11am, we deliver before 5pm anywhere inside the metro ring. This is the workhorse service: pathology samples, parts between branches, signed contracts, returned servers. Best price point for genuine same-day work.
After hours (6pm–6am and weekends)
Our overnight desk handles missed flights, urgent medical, breakdown parts and event load-ins. A standard sedan job from the airport to Geelong at 11pm is usually under two hours wheels-down to delivered.
The bit nobody mentions
Your delivery time is set by the slowest 100 metres, not the fastest 30 kilometres. Loading dock queues, lift bookings, locked reception desks and "back in 10 minutes" notes routinely add 20–40 minutes to an otherwise instant run. If your destination has any of those, tell us when you book and we’ll plan around it.
How to actually book the right service
- If a person is waiting and the clock matters — book Direct.
- If it needs to land today and you have a few hours — book Priority.
- If "by close of business" is fine — book Standard same day and save money.
- If it’s outside business hours — ring our After hours line directly.
Our same-day courier service covers metro Melbourne with 60-minute typical pickup; the after-hours service runs evenings, weekends and public holidays. For regular volumes, a freight account locks in dedicated dispatch and monthly invoicing. Check the coverage map to confirm your suburb — from Fitzroy to Dandenong, same-day metro runs daily.
Quote any job online in under a minute, or call dispatch on 1300 973 038. We answer 24/7 and we won’t quote you a timeframe we can’t hit.
